Recently, the American Society of Interior Designers – Illinois (ASID Illinois) held its annual Celebration of Design and Design Excellence Awards. I was honored to receive first place in the Kitchen by a Small Firm category for a recent project in Michigan.
The Design Excellence Awards recognizes design professionals that are either members of ASID or IIDA Illinois Chapters as well as registered interior designers in the state of Illinois. Designers submitted their entries in over 25 categories including residential, contract, and product design. A panel of distinguished interior design professionals from other ASID Chapters across the country reviewed the entries and selected category winners based on lighting, scale and proportion, color and composition, design creativity, function, and solutions appropriate to the design criteria. All entrants also included an IMPACT statement –an explanation of how the project affected the users’ lives or livelihoods.
Congratulations to all honorees on another incredible year of design!
About the Project
Creating a casual, welcoming kitchen – practical for cooking and comfortable for family dining, modern yet simple in nature to reflect the serenity of a rural farmhouse was at the heart of this project. The calm aesthetic embraced the peaceful setting of a secluded lakefront vacation property.
Central to the layout of the kitchen space is a custom island topped with a piece of vintage white marble that holds a special family history. Various design elements throughout the kitchen and family living spaces radiate from its essence – rich brown tones, soft golden creams, and a variety of textural elements compliment the range of the stone’s beautiful patina ….glazed brick subway splashes, handmade satin nickel cabinet pulls, and organic-shaped lighting fashioned from rusted metal agricultural wire frames lined in cream sackcloth freely hang from cloth cables.
Final details, from minimal window treatments, to a cozy textured wool rug comfortably grounding a simple plank table for family gatherings, to playful displays of beloved crockery collections, complete this family kitchen.
It was such joy to be part of this special project. With many thanks to my clients for the opportunity to design and for their trust…..and with much appreciation to the entire team that brought the designs and plans to life.
